What is Axelar?

Axelar is a decentralized interoperability network — effectively a proof-of-stake blockchain whose job is to connect other blockchains — providing secure cross-chain communication and asset transfers through a validator set that verifies and relays messages between chains. Rather than being a single bridge, Axelar is general-purpose interoperability infrastructure: its General Message Passing (GMP) lets developers call functions and move data/assets across chains, and it connects a broad set of EVM and non-EVM ecosystems (including Cosmos). Many applications and bridges (like Squid) are built on top of Axelar's routing. Its PoS security model, with staked AXL and a decentralized validator set, aims to make cross-chain messaging more trust-minimized than federated bridges. The trade-offs: a PoS interoperability network has its own security assumptions (validator honesty/stake), which is a different risk model to evaluate than light-client or optimistic approaches; its generality means end users usually interact via apps built on it rather than directly; and cross-chain security remains an area of active scrutiny industry-wide. But as foundational interoperability infrastructure connecting many ecosystems with a decentralized security model, Axelar is one of the most important cross-chain networks, widely used by developers building interchain applications.
