Trading bots split into two very different categories. On-chain Telegram bots (Trojan, BonkBot, Maestro) let you snipe and trade memecoins directly from chat with fast execution — built for time-sensitive on-chain trades. Exchange automation platforms (3Commas, Cryptohopper, Pionex) connect to centralised exchanges via API to run systematic strategies like grid and DCA. One is for fast on-chain speculation; the other is for automating disciplined trading on your exchange accounts.
On-chain Telegram bots require trusting the bot with a hot wallet's keys, generated inside the bot. This is a genuine security consideration — you should only keep trading amounts there, never a significant balance. Exchange bots connect via API keys with trading (not withdrawal) permissions, which is safer but still requires careful configuration. Understand exactly what access a bot has before funding it, and treat bot wallets as disposable hot wallets.
Automated trading does not print money. Grid bots suffer in strong trends, DCA underperforms in sustained downtrends, and sniping memecoins is extremely high-risk regardless of execution speed. The bot executes a strategy reliably; it does not make a losing strategy profitable. Backtest strategies against historical data where the platform allows (Cryptohopper, 3Commas, Bitsgap), and start small — a bot running a bad strategy loses money faster than you would manually.
On-chain bots charge a per-transaction fee (around 0.9–1%) that adds up on active trading. Better bots include anti-rug and honeypot detection that checks token contracts before you buy — valuable given how many memecoins are scams, though it reduces rather than eliminates risk. For privacy and control, self-hosted bots like Gunbot run on your own machine with a one-time license and no per-trade fee, at the cost of managing the infrastructure yourself.
