MEV-protected swap settlement via batch auctions and coincidence of wants
Last updated: June 2026
CoW Protocol (formerly CowSwap) takes a fundamentally different approach to DEX aggregation — instead of routing your trade to existing AMM pools in real time, it collects orders in a batch and attempts to match them peer-to-peer (coincidence of wants) before settling any remainder against on-chain liquidity. When two users want to swap in opposite directions within the same batch, CoW Protocol matches them directly at the midpoint price, giving both users a better price than any AMM would and zero slippage. For orders that cannot be fully matched peer-to-peer, professional solvers compete in an off-chain auction to find the best settlement path across DEXes, MEV protection included. The result is that CoW Protocol users are structurally protected from sandwich attacks and front-running — the defining form of MEV in DeFi — because order submission and settlement are decoupled. Gas costs are also lower because batch settlement amortizes transaction overhead. CoW Protocol is available on Ethereum mainnet and Gnosis Chain. The COW governance token accrues from protocol fees and grants holders voting rights. The main limitation is that CoW Protocol doesn't guarantee settlement speed — your order may not fill until the next batch, which introduces latency compared to instant AMM swaps.
